Statement of Intent on Aboriginal Youth Suicide

Statement of Intent on Aboriginal youth suicide May 2019

The Government is committed to improving the wellbeing of young Aboriginal people in WA. The Deputy Premier, the Hon Roger Cook MLA, is leading this approach with the Department of the Premier and Cabinet providing support to coordinate effort.

The Statement of Intent on Aboriginal youth suicide is the Western Australian Government’s response to the recommendations from the State Coroner’s Inquest into the deaths of 13 children and young person in the Kimberley Region, and the former Health and Education Standing Committee 2016 report, Learnings from the message stick: the report of the inquiry into Aboriginal youth suicide in remote areas.

The document outlines the Government’s position against each of the recommendations – in total 86 – and commits to engaging with key stakeholders to ensure that the issues that contribute to Aboriginal youth suicide are addressed in a way that is culturally informed and supported by evidence.
