About PSMD

The Public Sector Management Division's aim is all about building a vibrant and sustainable public sector that focuses on individual and service excellence. This, in simple terms is about making the public sector a great place to work and one which delivers services above and beyond community expectations.

We do this through attracting and retaining the highest calibre thinkers and doers, people with a strong sense of ownership and commitment to what we deliver. These same people can translate our purpose into workable solutions for the public sector.

Our principle responsibility is to support the Minister for Public Sector Management. The Premier as Minister for Public Sector Management has a key role in promoting the effectiveness and efficiency of the public Sector. To support the Minister, the Division must engage with Directors General and Chief Executive Officers in identifying and responding to the needs of their agencies. Our initiatives need to directly add value to agencies and the services that they deliver to the community.

The Division is also responsible for setting the legal and policy framework for employment, remuneration, redeployment and machinery of government reform. Again, working with agencies in delivering workable solutions to issues facing the public sector.

Currently, issues around labour and skill shortages are a key priority for the Division. Over the last several years we have been focused on public sector improvements through themes around: Workforce Development; Planning; Attraction and Retention. More recent work has been specifically geared towards workforce forecasting and initiatives around planning our future workforce needs. Initiatives around improving recruitment practices across government agencies, comprehensive professional development options, robust governance structures, addressing women in leadership priorities and improving our demographic reporting have also been high priorities for the Division.

This Division is about making a difference and seeing the results.
