The Council of Australian Governments
The Council of Australian Governments ("COAG") is the peak intergovernmental forum in Australia. COAG comprises the Prime Minister, State Premiers, Territory Chief Ministers and the President of the Australian Local Government Association.
The role of COAG is to initiate, develop and monitor the implementation of policy reforms that are of national significance and which require cooperative action by Australian governments (for example, health, education and training, Indigenous reform, early childhood development, housing, microeconomic reform, climate change and energy, water reform and natural disaster arrangements). Issues may arise from, among other things: Ministerial Council deliberations; international treaties which affect the States and Territories; or major initiatives of one government (particularly the Australian Government) which impact on other governments or require the cooperation of other governments.
The Intergovernmental Relations Unit supports the work of the Premier and Cabinet by ensuring that Western Australia has a clear, coordinated position on all key COAG issues. We do this by:
- Working with line agencies and inter-departmental committees to clarify Western Australian issues and develop State positions
- Representing Western Australia on COAG Senior Officials Working Groups
- Identifying and monitoring new and emerging issues of significance to Western Australia
- Providing strategic input on potential federal reform areas
- Maintaining networks of intergovernmental contacts across the State and the Federation
